Kapelle am Weinfelder Maar

Schalkenmehren

Open todayFurther opening hours

The small chapel is located on the northern shore of the Weinfelder Maar and is dedicated to Saint Martin. To this day, the local community of Schalkenmehren uses and maintains the adjacent cemetery of the chapel. This is also where another name for the Weinfelder Maar, Totenmaar, is derived.

The chapel was once the parish church of the village of Weinfeld, which was afflicted by the plague in the 16th century and subsequently abandoned. Hence the designation “Pestkapelle.”

The earliest foundations of the church likely date back to Roman times. Initially, there was a Celtic sanctuary at the same location. The first mention of a church in Weinfeld dates back to the year 1044, making it one of the oldest in the Eifel.

According to legend, anyone who pulls the ropes at the chapel to ring the bells inside can make a wish.
