Be free. Together. Outdoors.
When everyday life is behind you and the leash dangles loosely in your hand, a vacation begins that is not only good for you. The Eifel is a natural area where dogs can also breathe a sigh of relief: wide meadows, shady forests, cool streams - a real refuge for two- and four-legged friends. Away from hectic roads and far from the noise, a quiet freedom unfolds that invites you to explore.
Whether on a morning field walk in the early morning mist or on an extended hike along historic castle ruins - in the Eifel, being out and about with your dog is not only allowed, but welcome. Those who love water will find their own dog areas at lakes such as the Freilinger See or the Eschauel bathing beach - perfect for splashing around and romping.
Of course, consideration is part of this freedom: dogs must be kept on a lead in the protected areas of the national park and in nature reserves - to protect the wild inhabitants that live there. But even here, encounters with nature and history are possible: gentle, mindful, impressive.
Good to know: Numerous hosts in the Eifel are prepared for four-legged guests.
On the road together
Hike close to nature, stage by stage - without heavy luggage and with your dog by your side. On the varied Eifelsteig stages and partner trails of the Eifelsteig, a relaxed circular tour through pristine landscapes, past streams, forests and wide views awaits you. Overnight stays are in dog-friendly accommodation - luggage transport is organized. This leaves more time for the essentials: being out and about together.
Hiking trails where your dog can refresh himself by the water are particularly popular. Here we show you a small selection of walks - most of them run along small streams, on natural paths and have shady sections.

Welcome to "Burg Satzvey", one of the most beautiful water castles in the Rhineland region.
The spa town of Manderscheid is most famous for two medieval castle ruins that stand directly opposite each other on steep mountain spurs not far from the town's alleyways. The massive complexes are separated only by the little Lieser river and a meadow, which in summer becomes a perfect place for a breather while hiking the Eifelsteig trail or for a family picnic with children. On a weekend in August, however, the castles and the meadow are ideal settings for a spectacular festival with quaint crafts, jugglers, jousting tournaments and minstrel singing. In Advent, the Manderscheid Castle Christmas lends the town a special magic. The freely accessible upper castle with its five-storey keep still looks martial today. The lower castle can be explored on guided tours - even at night - or on your own; it only remains closed in bad weather.
