Dreaming of the Middle Ages - time travel to Eltz Castle

One of the most beautiful dream trails in the Eifel is the Eltz Castle Panorama dream trail. The hiking tour leads from the heights of the Maifeld to the Elz valley and the famous Eltz Castle. The hike will stay in your memory for a lifetime: immerse yourself in the legendary world of knights and princes, wilderness and nature.

We walk hand in hand, surrounded by glowing rapeseed fields. It is always breezy up here, that has never changed. The horizon is wide, Hunsrück, Taunus and Westerwald are visible in the distance. But that's not where we want to go. Our path along the Eltzer Burgpanorama dream trail allows us to experience perfect beauty much closer. Where up ahead a dense green band of mixed forest reveals the deep gorge in the gently undulating Maifeld plateau, there is the highlight of our hike: Eltz Castle! "Perfect beauty? Don't you think that's a bit much to ask?" my wife asks me. "You'll see ...", I reply and don't reveal any more. I haven't told her that our little route has already been voted the most beautiful in Germany. But I can see from her smile that she feels it too, even now. Gradually, we immerse ourselves in the tranquil meadow landscape of the Elzbach. "It's like a fairy tale," says my wife. "But without a witch or an evil wolf!" The steep path winds, the scent of wild strawberries fills the air and the view opens up again and again to sunny clearings. A bend and... "Oh!" exclaims my wife, "oh!" She stops abruptly. I grin to myself. That's exactly what happened to me the first time. It was a long time ago, but I could never forget the sight. Eltz Castle has never been destroyed; with its oriels and roofs, slate and half-timbering, it is still a dream come true. It captivates us and we surrender voluntarily.

• In Münstermaifeld, in the rustic quarry stone walls of a former farmhouse, you will find the restaurant "Löffel's Landhaus", which will whet your appetite for the countryside with its in-house creations and as a venue for cultural events.
• Visit Eltz Castle before 11:00 a.m. or after 3:00 p.m. to avoid possible waiting times. (Open from 01.Apri to 01.November)
