Where was the first "bathing establishment" in Gerolstein? When and where was "mineral water" found for the first time and were there actually several competing mineral water companies in Gerolstein in the past? Was there a "town wall" in Gerolstein? Even "old-established Gerolsteiners" are often unable to answer these and similar questions about the town's history, and if they can, then usually only from stories rather than from their own memories. We want to change that!
In the town center of Gerolstein, there were and are a number of buildings / squares / places that have a special significance for the history of our town. Often the "special character" of the place is no longer recognizable because today other buildings or uses dominate the image or the buildings and squares have been "modernized" over the decades and thus greatly changed. The sometimes serious changes to the townscape are evident from the archive material available to the town archive.
The photographic estate of the Gerolstein photographer Fredy Lange, which was handed over to us, is particularly noteworthy. This photo collection comprises around 5,000 photos from the years 1924 - 1982 with views of public and private buildings, streets, squares, businesses and events in the town. With our project idea, we would like to draw visitors' attention to 19 interesting places in the city center and use photos and short texts to give them an understanding of the "history" of these places and the changes between "then and now".
To this end, we have placed information boards on steles or on existing buildings, walls etc. at the 19 locations; with a photo "from back then" and a short title.
A walk to these points takes around 1 ½ to 2 hours. At each stop / historical point, you will receive entertaining information on an illustrated board.
The city walk starts opposite the Kyllpark at the entrance steps to the town hall, i.e. in front of the town hall on Kyllweg.
