The Eifel town of Manderscheid, at the height of the Volcanic Eifel and on the edge of the collar of the Lieser valley, stands out with its historic atmosphere. It’s as though it has been made especially for hiking. All around Manderscheid, the “Manderscheider Burgenstieg”, or castle trail, offers ever-changing perspectives onto the impressive dual castle complex and the town. 
The trail takes you along narrow, natural paths through the forest and high above the Leiser river. These highlights make the hike an absolute must! 
The tour is rounded off by fabulous photogenic views onto the upper and lower Manderscheid castles.

    From the narrow Rur valley along the wooded valleys of Kallbach and Schlehbach, the route climbs up to the windy plateau of Schmidt. In terms of riding technique, the route is suitable for everyone, as apart from a steep, long single trail between Zweifallshammer and Schmidt, the route is mostly easy. Here you are directly connected to the national park information point in Zerkall with a parking lot, but you can also easily travel by train to Nideggen-Brück station. Parking is also available in Nideggen at Zweifallshammer, at Schmidt-Scheidbaum, in Kommmerscheid or in Mausbach.
