Description

"The castle via ferrata in Manderscheid - let's get this straight from the start - is the best non-alpine via ferrata in Germany!" (Climbing book author Axel Jentzsch Rabl from Tyrol) ❗ Important note on stage 3: ❗ Please only start the challenging, most difficult stage of the Burgenklettersteig with sufficient arm strength and fitness for at least 1.5 hours!!!

Before you set off...

It happens from time to time that sections of the trail have to be temporarily diverted or closed. Just take a look at www.gesundland-vulkaneifel.de/info/wege-info/.

A unique nature experience around the spectacular backdrop of the two Manderscheid castles. The Burgenklettersteig consists of three stages, each of which can be experienced individually or connected by short hiking passages.
A 1.3 km approach leads you from the Burgenblick parking lot to the start of stage 1.

Total distance: approx. 4 km, including 1.3 km ascent, 1 km secured by ropes in total
Walking time: 3-4 hours plus breaks, depending on experience and fitness level.
Requirements: sure-footedness, no fear of heights, good physical condition, sturdy footwear, arm height approx. 1.60 m (height min. 1.40 m)

Stage 1: Lieser
The route alternates between rugged rock formations and short hiking sections through the Lieser valley - always with a direct view of the gently rushing river.

Difficulty level: B/C, one section C/D

Stage 2: Oberburg
An old rocky path with a short climbing section leads up to Oberburg Castle. From there, the view opens up through the Liesertal valley and over to the royal stage around the Niederburg.

Difficulty level: A/B, a rock ascent of approx. 30 m up to difficulty level C

Stage 3: Niederburg
This stage is very demanding and requires a good level of fitness due to the individual exposed and overhanging passages. The castle bridge and the exit via the temple wall form the crowning finale.

Difficulty level: C/D

❗ Important note on stage 3: ❗

Please only start the challenging, most difficult stage of the Burgenklettersteig if you have sufficient arm strength and fitness for at least 1.5 hours!!!

Please note that there may be longer waiting times, especially on public holidays, weekends and vacation periods.

Thank you for your understanding!
