Description

A manageable loop that tells more than its kilometers suggest: The "Köhlerblicke" trail near Müsch combines the original Ahr landscape with traces of mining history and current forest research. As part of the AhrSchleifen, the route will be implemented as an innovative audio tour by autumn 2026 - a trail that audibly combines nature experience and knowledge.

On the trail of the charcoal burners Starting at the old schoolyard in Müsch, the route first takes you through the Flutallee, whose still young trees are reminiscent of the dynamics of the Ahr. It soon becomes quieter. The path climbs moderately and a little later you reach a former charcoal pit. Charcoal was once produced here, essential for smelting ore in the region. Charcoal burning, a craft that was widespread for centuries, not only shaped the economy of the Eifel, but also its forests.
Far-reaching views and a change of perspective The ascent to the XXL bench above Müsch challenges you a little without being too demanding. Once you reach the top, the view opens up over the Ahr valley and the wooded mountain ranges of the Hocheifel. A little further on, the XL panoramic bench invites you to take a more peaceful break. From here, it becomes clear how strongly relief, geology and land use are interwoven. The undulating heights, the notched valleys, the mosaic-like forest structure - they are the result of millions of years of geological history and human cultivation.
Forest in transition: hands-on research A particularly contemporary accent awaits you at the breeding station for climate-resilient pines. Here, research is carried out into which origins and genetic lines can withstand future periods of drought and temperature increases. You will gain an insight into modern forest genetics and adaptation strategies, which have become increasingly important in view of the drought summers of recent years.
The following forest trail winds its way through an older oak stand, whose gnarled trunks and deeply furrowed bark tell the story of decades, sometimes centuries.
Arriving in the village - spaces for encounters Back in Müsch, you pass the juniper hut and reach the play and leisure area as well as the park-like inclusion garden. Herb beds, an insect hotel and low-barrier paths set an example for participation and biodiversity on a small scale. If you like, you can end the tour with a conscious look at the diversity of native plants
Listen to what the trail has to say The Ahrschleife Köhlerblicke will be implemented as an innovative audio tour by fall 2026. In future, audio stations will combine short stories, historical classifications and natural history explanations to create a polyphonic experience. This will create a form of hiking that combines movement, knowledge and design - and gives you the opportunity not only to cross the landscape, but also to understand it in its historical and ecological layers.
When you walk the loop, you will not experience a spectacular long-distance hike, but a concentrated concentration of nature, history and future issues in a small space. This is precisely its quality: You return with impressions that last beyond the day.
