Precious Remnants of a Magnificent Estate Saved! The 19th century was an exciting time for archaeology, as people became increasingly fascinated by their history. When a farmer came across precious mosaics while working in a field near Bitburg, he didn’t simply plow them under. The finds were secured and protected with structures that are now themselves designated as historic landmarks.
Go check it out. Today we know that near the village of Fließem stood a vast estate, featuring a lavishly furnished manor house, bathing facilities, and even its own temple complex. Of course, there was also a heating system. The residential wing included a service area with various buildings.
Today, the precious mosaic floors that once adorned the stately rooms are particularly fascinating. The villa faced the important Roman road between Trier and Cologne, and if you drive on to Bitburg, you’ll reach a formerly important Roman roadside settlement with a large fort. The city’s Roman history is brought to life through an interesting multimedia archaeological trail.
For children ages 7 and up, there’s an exciting scavenger hunt (see the Download section). Alternatively, you can pick up the flyer at the Bitburger Land Tourist Information Office, Römermauer 6, Bitburg.
A stop on the Roman Roads.
