Schalkenmehren
In 1953–54, the Argelander Institute at the University of Bonn built an observatory on the “Hoher List” volcanic group near Schalkenmehren. It was used for scientific purposes until 2012.
Subsequently, the most modern building on the entire site was taken over by the Astronomical Association of the Vulkaneifel (AVV), which continued to operate it.
In 2015, the observatory was designated a historic landmark, thereby preventing its demolition.
Currently, the entire complex is privately owned by a physicist who worked on-site in astronomical research for many years.
