Port Haus

UNESCO World Heritage Site Igeler Säule. The column was built in the first half of the 3rd century AD by a wealthy cloth merchant family. In November 1986, the 23 m high column was declared a World Cultural Heritage.

The parish of St. Genovefa surrounds Obermendig, the upper part of the city, which was first mentioned in 1041. In 1365 the construction of a three-aisled hall church began and St. Genovefa and St. Laurentius consecrated.

The village fountain in front of the church used to be called the Celtic fountain.

The Kierberg lies at an altitude of 450 meters above sea level. From here you can look over the picturesque old town of the climatic health resort Monschau. Monschau was first mentioned in a document as early as 1198. A little later the lords of "Montjoie" built a castle on a rocky promontory above the Rur valley.

The famous baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann was won over as an architect for the church. The client for this was the noble family of the Counts von der Leyen.
