The vineyard consists of limestone and dolomite stone layers of the Middle Devonian period. They originated from calcareous marine deposits in the area of a reef belt. The rocks of this layer sequence consist of dickbankingen reef limestone, which are rich in fossils.

Monschau

As the only conglomerate rock in the Monschauer Land, the immense, 80 metre-long Richelsley Rock lies on the edge of the High Fens. It was topped with a cross in 1890 to honour Prior Stephan Horrichem, the “Apostle of the High Fens”.
The castle complex was built in 1696-98 as a fortified noble estate. Even though the building cannot be entered (private property), it is worth a look through the archway.
