Bitburg

Open today

Bitburg was already a bustling place in Roman times. As the roadside settlement of Beda, located along an important trade route, it was home to shops, restaurants, inns, temples, and a theater. After the Germanic tribes ravaged the town, a fortified camp with walls, towers, and gates was built, and its extensive wall ruins still shape the cityscape today.
Follow the multimedia archaeological trail through the city center! Information panels and steles provide interesting background information, and on the Bitburg city website you can find more information and watch videos. Roman artifacts can also be found at the Bitburg District Museum. Why not plan a side trip to the nearby Roman Villa Otrang. It features exquisite mosaic floors and bears witness to the magnificent lifestyle of Roman landowners in days gone by.

A stop along the Roman Roads.

If you’d like to make the experience even more exciting: The tourist information office offers various puzzle sheets for all ages. Find the answers to the questions along the archaeological trail and receive a small gift afterward.

Accessibility Information:

The Archaeological Trail is largely wheelchair- and stroller-friendly. There is only one spot where you’ll need to navigate two steps.
The surface conditions along the loop trail vary greatly, ranging from paved roads to cobblestones. Access points via ramps or stairs also vary in design. The 11th station on the loop trail is not accessible, as there is no ramp. The signage was a positive feature; although it is only in German, it is mounted at an appropriate height and is therefore readable even for wheelchair users. Ample parking is available, including designated accessible parking spaces.
