Hiking on the Eifelsteig trail - an introduction.
Starting from the north, this route passes through the landscape highlights of the first 100 kilometres or so of the Eifelsteig:
The high moorland of the “Hohes Venn”, or high fen, which is steeped in legend, the Eifel lake region with its impressive dams and the ancient beech forest of the Eifel National Park, the stillness of the Kloster Steinfeld monastery, the source of the river Ahr in Blankenheim, and much more.
Kornelimünster with its churches worth seeing and old town houses, the former monastery and today's museum offers an excellent ambience for strolling. Important art treasures, the "Historical Fair" in June, the Korneli Octave in September and the Christmas market are reasons to visit the pilgrimage site. The pubs in the romantic alleyways attract walkers and stopovers. Kornelimünster is the starting point of the Eifelsteig long-distance hiking trail, which runs 313 km in 15 stages through the Eifel to Trier.
The historical old town of Monschau at the Rur.
Carefree family bathing fun in the Obersee
The national park information point in the cozy Heilsteinhaus Einruhr welcomes all guests, who want to find out more about the Eifel National Park region.
In September 2016, the new visitor’s and exhibition centre, the Forum Vogelsang IP, was opened. The two main exhibitions are the documentation of the National Socialist period, “Destiny: Master Race. National Socialist Ordensburgen - Both Fascination and Crime” and the adventure exhibition “Wilderness Dreams” organised by the Eifel National Park Centre.
Set in a dramatic landscape of woods interspersed with water, the Eifel National Park will allow you to experience the fascinating natural diversity of a wilderness at first hand. For in this large protection area some 65 kilometres southwest of Cologne, nature has been left once more to its own eternal cycle of growth and decay.
Castle flair and half-timbered idyll of yesteryear - the Ahrquelle is one of the town's most important landmarks. The sublime castle towers over the town and is now a youth hostel. Discover Blankenheim on a stroll through the charming old town streets with half-timbered houses.
