The readers of *Wandermagazin* have decided: The VulkaMaar Trail is Germany’s most beautiful hiking trail of 2021! The trail leads from the Manderscheid castles through the Wolfsschlucht gorge to the largest Eifel maar.


Before you set out…

From time to time, sections of the trail may need to be rerouted or closed temporarily. Just check www.gesundland-vulkaneifel.de/info/wege-info/.

Starting in Manderscheid, this stage offers several panoramic views of the castles. The Wolfschlucht gorge, with its massive basalt columns, is also a great place to linger. The Volcano Adventure Park near Bettenfeld lets you delve deep into the geological history of the Vulkaneifel. The panoramic view from the Mosenberg Summit Hut down into the Kleine Kyll Valley and across the Liesertal Valley is truly impressive. The geological highlight of this stage is the Meerfelder Maar.

    From the narrow Rur valley, head east (clockwise) up to the edge of the Börde. From there, the route continues undulating to Hergarten. Different vegetation, wide forest paths, steep trails and several ups and downs make this tour a very long and varied, but moderately difficult panoramic ride. You can start from the parking lots at the Heimbach or Abenden national park gate stations, at the Eschauel bathing beach or north and south of the Schwammenauel dam.
