Maare-und-Thermen-Pfad: Etappe 1 Ulmen - Lutzerath

The Maare and Thermal Springs Trail in Ulmen at Jungferweiher offers a perfect start. From here, the trail leads to the Ulmen Maar, with its castle ruins perched atop it. The trail then descends into the Ueßbach Valley.

The starting point of the Vulkaneifel Trail is Ulmen, where the hike begins at Jungferweiher. Afterward, you’ll be treated to a stunning view of the Ulmen Maar from the ruins of Ulmen Castle. The trail then descends to the Ueßbach, whose floodplains—with their countless variety of wildflowers and herbs—are a feast for the eyes and the palate. The small stream is a constant companion on the hike, which passes several old mills. After just under 19 km, you’ll reach the stage’s destination, Lutzerath. Here, it’s worth taking a detour to the nearby village of Driesch, where you can admire the impressive Altar of the Sorrows at the “Mater Dolorosa.”
