Teufelsloch (Devil's hole) near Bollendorf

The Teufelsloch is an impressive narrow gorge near Bollendorf. Above the gorge, a staircase leads to a viewing point with a beautiful view of Bollendorf.


Work of the devil or created by nature? Anyone hiking through the bizarre rock formations of the Ferschweiler plateau may ask themselves this question again and again, so unreal do some of the gorges, crevices and mighty towers of Lias sandstone appear. The dark gorge with metre-high walls at the edge of the plateau above the Sûre Valley is one of the many impressive legacies of the Ice Age rock slides and and does not bear the name "Teufelsloch" (Devil's hole) for nothing

Don't miss the view from the viewing rock above the Teufelsloch, which can be reached via a steep path. From here you can see far over the valley with its wooded rocky slopes and Bollendorf on the right bank of the Sûre.

    With a diameter of 100 metres, the Radio Telescope Effelsberg is one of the largest fully mobile radio telescopes on earth.  Since its commissioning in 1972, the company has continuously worked on improving its technology (e. g. B. a new surface of the antenna dish, better receivers for high-quality data, extremely lownoise electronics) so that even today it is still considered one of the most modern telescopes in the world.

    The vineyard consists of limestone and dolomite stone layers of the Middle Devonian period. They originated from calcareous marine deposits in the area of a reef belt. The rocks of this layer sequence consist of dickbankingen reef limestone, which are rich in fossils.
