The main passage of the bunker is 53 meters long, and the tunnels are 1.80 meters high on average. A total of about 300 cubic meters of rock was removed from the mountain by hand. During air raids, the facility provided shelter for about 300 to 400 people. The small chambers along the tunnels, in particular, were dug into the mountain by hand by the families involved.

To this day, the bunker remains in remarkably good and, above all, safe condition. This was also confirmed in 2026 by the State Office for Geology and Mining. Due to its size and unique design, the bunker is one of a kind in the region.

But the bunker is not only an extraordinary testament to the era of World War II; it is also an important part of Niederzissen’s village history. For this reason, the Niederzissen Culture and Heritage Association is now dedicating itself to this fascinating and mysterious relic, making it accessible to those interested.

Tours are generally available on the last Saturday of each month between 10 a.m. and 2 p.m. Additional group tours can be arranged upon request.

    Marian Grotto Albach

    East of Bitburg, about 3 km away, lies the Albachtal in an idyllic limestone gorge. Stairs of natural stone (caution: danger of slipping) lead to the enchanted place of the Mariengrotte. Moss, ferns and clover line the path to the left and right. After a short time, the view of a waterfall and the Mariengrotte opens up.
