Ich bin der Biber, der Baumeister am Omerbach
Stolberg
Take a close look: maybe you will see my traces!
I am the beaver and I make my home by the Omerbach. With my strong teeth, I fell trees to get to the tasty bark and to build dams. This way, I hold back the water, making my structures safe.
Beavers were almost extinct in Germany in the past, but today they are back. Beaver lodges can be recognized by the piled branches and the entrance under the water. If you are quiet, you might hear a splash in the evening – that is our warning signal when we slap the water with our tails.
Become a wildlife detective: Look by the stream for gnawed tree trunks or small dams. Can you tell whether a tree was felled by a beaver or by a human?
