also called Totenmaar [maar of the dead] The Weinfelder Maar is considered the "symbol of the Eifel melancholy". Gentle slopes, on which the Eifel gold - popularly known as "Besenginster"grows and shines in early summer, around the mostly turquoise shimmering water.
As the central point of contact in the Volcano Park, the information centre offers an overview of the wide range of geological and archaeological themes covered in the park.

Tithes and monastery barns already existed in the early Middle Ages. They served as warehouses for the acceptance and storage of the natural tax, the "tithe". In Lüxem, the Counts of Manderscheid, among others, acted as bailiffs for the Abbey of St. Maximin in Trier and collected the tithes for the monks.
National Geopark Laacher See Geological heritage of the East Eifel The largest lake in Rhineland-Palatinate, the Laacher See, is at the center of the Laacher See National Geopark, which was newly formed in 2016. The Geopark Laacher See extends from Andernach am Rhein over the Brohl valley near Niederzissen north of Laacher See. In the east, the area extends into the Eifel near Boos and includes the entire volcano park from Mayen via Mendig to Kaltenengers.
