With the Rur always close by, we visit churches, chapels and sacred places. There is also history and stories.
After you have parked your car in one of the parking lots or taken the Rurtalbahn train, you will cross the beautiful Rur. You pass the swimming pool, tennis court and sports field and find yourself in the middle of the countryside. Passing the campsite and crossing the Rur again, you soon reach the small village of Hausen.
You continue to the neighboring village of Blens with its chapel of St. George. The route now takes you through the picturesque countryside of the Rur valley to Abenden, where you will come across a large sandstone cross from the second half of the 18th century in the middle of the village. The route now continues to Nideggen. You will need to pedal hard to get there, as the route takes you up a pleasant but steady incline through a few hairpin bends.
After a short time and another small climb, you will pass numerous places to stop for refreshments before reaching the church of St. John the Baptist, which is dedicated to St. John the Baptist. The route then takes you back to the market square and from there continues downhill to Brück, where you cross the Rur before climbing steadily uphill again. Schmidt is your next destination. Follow the small Schliebach stream into the charming Schliebachtal valley and then up to Schmidt, where you will find the St. Hubertus church in the village center. From the heights of Schmidt, the route now heads downhill again to the sandstone cross near Abenden in the direction of Lake Rursee and then on to the Rur dam in Schwammenauel.
Cycling through a richly wooded landscape, you can enjoy the varied views over the forests, small islands and foothills of the lake. From Eschauel to Schwammenauel, you follow the banks of Lake Rur on a flat stretch to your next destination, the Nepomuk Chapel in Hasenfeld. Leaving the jetty of the Rursee shipping company behind you, your route continues downhill until you reach the small chapel at a fork in the road. The last stop on this route is in the center of Heimbach.
After an extensive tour of this last point on the route, you cycle past small stores and cafés back to the starting point, the Heimbach National Park gate.
