The Burberg in Schutz gives this hike its name. The unique volcanic mountain offers cultural treasures in the form of the remains of a Roman fortification from the 4th century.
Before you set out…
From time to time, sections of the trail may need to be temporarily rerouted or closed. Just check www.gesundland-vulkaneifel.de/info/wege-info/.
The tour starts in the small village of Schutz, right next to St. Wendelin Chapel. From there, the trail continues for just under 8 km through the forest to Deudesfeld. The small, idyllic fishing pond behind Deudesfeld is the perfect spot for a short break. The unspoiled nature around Schutz offers a truly memorable hiking experience. The Speicherbach stream now accompanies hikers for several kilometers until it flows into the Kleine Kyll.
The Burberg, also known as the Burgberg, Buerberg, or Schutzer Kopf, rises within the Vulkaneifel Nature Park. It formed as a volcano about 11,000 years ago.
Highlights along the way:
Insider tip: Plan a detour to the Burberg shortly after setting out (walking distance about 1.4 km). From the very top, you’ll be treated to a breathtaking panoramic view.
