As the day draws to a close, he comes to life: the night watchman. Dressed in his old uniform, armed with a halberd and a lantern, he makes his way through the narrow streets—telling stories as old as the city itself. “Listen up, folks, let me tell you…”—almost everyone knows that line. But do you know what it means? The night watchman will tell you—with a wink and plenty of exciting anecdotes. He’ll explain where the greatest dangers used to lurk—outside the city gates or deep in the dark alleys. You’ll learn how people lived back then, whether kids used to always hate going to school (or sometimes actually liked it!)—and what the mysterious “thumb brake” is all about. Amid cobblestones, half-timbered houses, and the murmur of the river, history comes alive. Not a stuffy museum, but a real open-air experience—with someone who knows how to make the night come alive.

So close to the historic old town...
It wasn’t until September 2025 that Stolberg Castle began to shine in new splendor after a long renovation. Our guided tour takes you on a journey through time: You’ll wander through the great tower with its observation deck—20 meters high, 50 meters above the valley. The view? Unforgettable! You’ll learn why the castle was once a fortress and then a palace, how Moritz Kraus rebuilt it in the Historicist style, and why it belongs to all Stolberg residents today. And you’ll discover that not everything here is as old as it seems—but everything is full of character.Experience rare castle architecture, hear about vassal families like the von Efferens, and feel the transition from the age of knights to civic pride. No clichés, just real stories just waiting to be discovered by you.
An interesting and entertaining city tour that takes you from picturesque half-timbered houses to buildings made of quarry stone. Learn how the city might have gotten its name, why some houses have barely more than one room per floor, and how the market square came to be. In addition, your guide will introduce you to Monschau’s typical specialties: Dütchen, Vennbrocken, Printen, mustard, Els, or coffee. And sometimes you can even sample a little something…
