Ausgrabungsstätte - Villa Sarabodis

Gerolstein

A Roman estate with a small museum right next to a magnificent Protestant church. Three good reasons for a trip to the Vulkaneifel!

In 1907 the foundations of a villa rustica were found on the "Hofacker" during the excavation work for the construction of the Church of the Redeemer in Gerolstein.
The remains of Villa Sarabodis are dated to the 1st century AD, the buildings were inhabited until the middle of the 4th century. The Roman villas on the estates of the Eifel often served as stately summer residences and were usually luxuriously furnished.
In addition to the foundation walls and foundations, a well-preserved antique underfloor heating system was found here next to the entrance gate. Partly reconstructed and equipped with a small protective superstructure, it can be visited next to other finds that are on display in the Roman-Germanic Museum of Antiquity »Villa Sarabodis«, next to the Church of the Saviour Gerolstein.
