Certainly a much-visited cemetery 1800 years ago, today located in the middle of the forest: Houses for the deceased from Roman times.

They look like small houses, the burial cists and grave monuments that were erected here on the slope above what is now Holsthum at the beginning of the 2nd century. The two small cemeteries in the forest below the Schankweiler Klause belonged to a nearby farmstead. At that time, a path certainly led past here.

Burial cists made of sandstone slabs or stone blocks with recesses once contained urns with the ashes of the deceased and some grave goods. They were covered with roof or house-shaped stones, known as hut tombstones. Two of these capstones in Holsthum have unusual shapes: One represents a pyramid with a truncated top, the other a tall obelisk. A little further away is a burial site that was once covered by a large, semi-circular decorated stone.
