Green and inconspicuous in everyday life, decisive in an emergency.

The extreme weather events in July 2021 led to severe flooding in large parts of the Eifel region, including around Roetgen. Roads, houses and entire town centers were under water. This flood showed how important retention areas can be. Because where streams are too narrow, the risk for places downstream increases.

Retention basins create buffers: they absorb water during heavy rainfall and thus slow down the flood. In Roetgen, the aim is to design such "green basins" close to the landscape. They remain untouched in everyday life, only filling up in a controlled manner during floods - an example of how technical flood protection and nature can work together.

Suitable locations and careful interventions not only create safety, but also a habitat for plants and animals. This is how foresighted prevention works - not against the stream, but together with it.
