Monschau
The double-towered parish church, often referred to as the "Eifel Cathedral", stands out as a landmark in the village of Kalterherberg, located directly on the German-Belgian border.
Built in 1898 in the neo-Romanesque style, the church can still be seen from afar as you approach Kalterherberg.
Under Pastor Arnoldy, the "Eifeldom" was consecrated on 14 July 1901 by the Auxiliary Bishop of Cologne, Dr. Antonius Fischer, after a construction period of around 3 years.
The "Eifeldom" is a landmark of the village of Kalterherberg, which lies directly on the German-Belgian border. Construction of the neo-Romanesque church began in 1898. After just three years of construction, the building was consecrated on 14 July 1901 by the Auxiliary Bishop of Cologne, Dr. Antonius Fischer.
The predecessor of the "Eifeldom", which was built in 1767, could not cope with the crowds of people attending church in Kalterherberg. At that time, there were around 1100 inhabitants and the church only had basic dimensions of 10 x 19 meters. For these reasons, Father Hemkes set up a fund to rebuild the church as early as 1866.
The costs for the new building amounted to 112,600 marks, but the fund only contained 92,000 marks. The missing money was financed by a house collection.
The building company Dohmen from Heimbach built the church according to the plans of the Cologne architect Theodor Kremer and with stones from a quarry at Richelsley.
One year after completion, the mission cross and a rosary window were installed in the "Eifeldom". A year later, the Scholl siblings donated the Maria Hilf altar to the church in memory of their deceased parents. In the same year, the Stations of the Cross were erected. Over the next few years, the church received new bells, an organ from the Breuer workshop in Zülpich, choir stalls and a heating system. The church was painted under Pastor Lambertz by August Degen Jr. from Mönchengladbach.
