Kommern Castle was built around 1350 and until 1794 was the seat of the ducal Arenberg bailiff of the imperial lordship of Kommern, so it was an administrative building.

In a tunnel system, visitors get an insight into the slate mining of bygone days.

In 1994 the association for a local history museum created a field on Schulstrasse between Ober- and Niedermendig that shows exhibits from the surrounding volcanoes, the volcanic field.
