Aussicht über Zweifall: Konfessionen in der Landschaft

Roetgen

Open today
A church steeple in sight – and yet not the destination. From here, Zweifall lies in view, with its Protestant Lutheran church. For the Reformed Christians from Roetgen, it was nevertheless not a point of contact.

For in the 18th century, confessional differences were more than matters of faith. They regulated belonging, church law, and community organization. Even though Reformed and Lutherans were close in their faith, attending services across these boundaries was unusual.

Thus, the church path did not lead to Zweifall or Monschau, but further to Stolberg. The view over the valley shows how close the communities were in proximity – and how clearly they lived separately from one another.

Impressions

  • Two hikers walk along a narrow path, surrounded by trees and a small waterhole. The sky is clear and sunny, the landscape appears peaceful and inviting.
