Aussicht über Zweifall: Konfessionen in der Landschaft

Roetgen

Open today
A church tower within sight - and yet not the destination. Zweifall is in view from here, with its Protestant-Lutheran church. For the reformed Christians from Roetgen, however, it was not a place to go.

In the 18th century, confessional differences were more than just a matter of faith. They regulated affiliation, church law and community organization. Even if Reformed and Lutherans were close in their faith, attending church services across these boundaries was unusual.

The church route did not lead to Zweifall or Monschau, but on to Stolberg. The view across the valley shows how close the congregations were spatially - and yet how clearly separated they lived from each other.
