The mysterious 13 - Twelve maars and a crater lake
A guided tour of the volcanic lakes of the Eifel takes place every Sunday from April to October at 11 am. Today's maar: Eichholz maar
As dramatic and wild as the formation of the maars was, the water-filled maars appear to us today as quiet and mysterious - the peaceful eyes of the Eifel. Many legends and stories surround these silent witnesses to the battle of the elements. Listen to the experienced guides on our Sunday tours.
The year is 1811 and a certain J.J. Tranchot, a French geographer, is travelling through the Eifel to carry out the first topographical survey of the Rhineland on behalf of Napoleon. Between the villages of Duppach and Steffeln, he picks up a blue pencil to draw a small lake called Gussweiher on his map. Tranchot knew little about the origins of this small lake. But you can find out on an eventful hike to this beautiful spot in the Eifel. Because this body of water is one of the mysterious 13 that have made the volcanic Eifel world-famous.
