The Sangweiher is located directly on the Maare-Mosel cycle path, between Schalkenmehren in the north and Udler in the south. It is a shallow dammed water body with adjacent wetland biotopes and meadow areas. The area of the Sangweiher is considered to be a relict of a former maar. Due to its supra-regional importance, especially for waterfowl and migratory birds, the Sangweiher and its adjacent areas have been included in the European Natura 2000 system of protected areas (bird sanctuary).
