The origin of the shoe wanker with the spring is Wittlich Today's Ermannstraße in Wittlich commemorates the "Chemische Fabrik Wittlich", founded in 1909 by Salomon Ermann-Bach, which was affectionately called the "Wichsfabrik" by the people of Wittlich. Together with Wittlich's honorary citizen and jump cap inventor Wilhelm "Willi" Schrot and the innovative chemical tinkerer Dr. Alfred Lachs, the Ermann brothers Alfred and Otto made Ermin shoe polish famous beyond the borders of Germany.
