The trail is named after Saint Apollonia, who is also the patron saint of the tranquil little village of Winkel.

The hike starts in Niederwinkel and leads to nearby Oberwinkel. Passing meadows and fields, the trail climbs steeply. It then heads downhill toward the Wacholderheide Geisert Nature Reserve, following the Dreisbach stream. The forest section that follows is perfect for a quick dip in the woods. Afterward, the challenging climb up the Tommelberg can be tackled in a relaxed and easygoing manner. To round off the hike, the trail then leads back to Niederwinkel.
