Gerolstein
The Church of the Redeemer in Gerolstein is undoubtedly one of the places visitors should see during a stay in the “City of Fountains,” Gerolstein.
Millions of mosaic tiles, which make the church’s interior glow spectacularly depending on the light, bear witness to the wealth and power of the last German emperor. On May 25, 1911, the cornerstone was laid for the extraordinary Protestant Church of the Redeemer, on the direct orders of Wilhelm II, right in the heart of the Catholic Eifel region. After a construction period of just under two years, the emperor himself—shortly before the end of his reign—insisted on personally consecrating the costly, magnificent building on October 15, 1913. The Church of the Redeemer is considered a rare art-historical document of the waning German imperial era and is interpreted as a political monument. The impressive central structure, built in the Neo-Romanesque style with its sparkling gold mosaics, delights thousands of visitors each year and ranks among the top attractions in the Vulkaneifel region.
Visits to the church are only possible as part of a guided tour !
