R Sa1 - Historic Saffig 3 km - easy

Directions:

The circular route starts at the village square and first leads up Neuwieder Straße and Kettiger Straße into the Saffig fields. From there you have a fantastic view of the village of Saffig and the baroque church of St. Cäcilia. The path continues through a small wood and ends at the "Kreuzberg", where you keep left and follow the path uphill. At the top, an impressive "pillared hall" awaits you. Passing numerous crossroads, the path leads back down the Kreuzberg towards the town center. Once you reach Bassenheimer Straße (L123), turn right and follow the road. The path takes you past the baroque church of St. Cäcilia, which you should definitely take a look inside. Opposite the baroque church, continue into Alleestraße and then follow the street "Klöppelsberg" past the Saffiger Synagogue. It is the only synagogue in Rhineland-Palatinate where religious services are once again actively taking place after renovation. Now follow Neustraße uphill back to the village square.

Sights along the way:

Synagogue: The synagogue dates back to the 19th century. As a rural house of prayer, it reflects the former Jewish life in the Pellenz. It is the only synagogue in Rhineland-Palatinate where services are once again being held after renovation.

Kreuzberg with portico: The pillared hall on the "Kreuzberg" was built by the Counts von der Leyen in the 18th century. The path to the portico is lined with numerous wayside shrines.

Baroque church of St. Cäcilia: The baroque church in Saffig is a special architectural gem. The famous Baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann (1687-1753) was commissioned as the architect. He was commissioned by the noble family of the Counts von der Leyen, who lived in Saffig Castle at the time.
