Der Hohlweg: Spuren im Boden, Spuren im Alltag

A path that has shaped itself: Hollow ways form where humans and animals have used the same route for generations. Rain washes away soil, wheels and footsteps compact the ground – thus the path slowly digs itself deeper into the terrain.

There are such sections on the Old Church Path as well. For those heading to Stolberg, it was not the most beautiful but the most reliable path they sought. A route they knew, which had proven itself – and which was used time and again.

The hollow way is therefore more than just a detail at the roadside. It shows that the Old Church Path was not a one-time event but a recurring routine. And the soil still remembers it today.

Path Check: Look at the edges of the path: Where is the ground particularly deep? Where is there more greenery, where is it sparse? Often, this reveals how long and intensively a route has been used.

  • Two hikers are walking on a path through a forest, surrounded by trees and a small stretch of water. The sky is clear and the landscape appears peaceful.
