The wild horse excursion to Sophienhöhe invites you to a special nature experience in the Rhenish mining area in 2026. During the guided tour, participants discover the impressive landscape of the recultivated Sophienhöhe and observe the Konik wild horses living there in their natural habitat. The robust animals were introduced as part of a grazing project and actively help to maintain the open landscape and promote biodiversity.

The excursion combines exciting insights into nature, recultivation and sustainable landscape development with impressive views of the former Hambach open-cast mining area. During a guided hike, visitors learn how a former spoil tip was gradually transformed into a valuable natural area. Today, the Goldene Aue in particular is considered an example of successful structural change and modern nature conservation.

In addition to observing the wild horses, the focus is also on information about the development of the Sophienhöhe, native animal and plant species and the ecological significance of recultivation. The event is aimed at nature lovers, families and hiking enthusiasts alike and offers the opportunity to get to know the unique landscape of the indeland from a new perspective.
