"On the Trail of Eugenie: The Story of a Jewish German" - Reading in the former synagogue of Wittlich with Ulrike Michel
On November 12, 2026 , the author reading with Ulrike Michel about her book 'On the Trail of Eugenie: The Story of a Jewish German' will take place at the cultural and conference venue of the former synagogue in Wittlich.
Ulrike Michel discovered an unpublished handwritten novel manuscript with the working title 'Chased by Fate' through an inheritance. The manuscript is by Felix Kaufmann, an acquaintance from the author's family circle, and describes the life of Eugenie: a Jewish German whose life is thrown off balance by the events of Nazi rule. Through detective work, Ulrike Michel found out that the real-life inspiration for the novel character is Wally Gross from Trier. After being systematically marginalized due to her Jewish faith and forced labor, Wally Gross was deported in 1941 with one of the first transports and murdered in Kaunas, Lithuania. The work combines passages from the original manuscript with Michel's historical research and conversations with descendants of the family.
