The impressive abbey church forms the heart of the Maria Laach monastery complex and is considered one of the most beautiful and best-preserved Romanesque monuments in the country - in the tradition of the great Romanesque cathedrals in Speyer, Mainz and Worms in the Rhineland. The church is decoratively built from brown-yellow Laach tuff, white limestone and red Kylls sandstone. Later, gray tuff from the Eifel and basalt lava were also used. Special features include the underground crypt and the vestibule, the so-called "paradise".
In addition to the monastery with the guest wing, the various monastery businesses are located on the grounds. The monastery earns its money from the businesses themselves. It is particularly worth mentioning that the abbey has its own combined heat and power plant, which also generates some of its own energy. Maria Laach is also self-sufficient thanks to its own spring from which it draws its water.
