Exploring Earth’s History: Steffeln Volcano Garden and Eichholzmaar

This scenic hike takes you through the typical Eifel village of Steffeln, which has won awards several times in the “Our Village Has a Future” competition, past historic houses, old wayside crosses, and wayside shrines. Many of the old farmhouses in the village are built from locally quarried volcanic rock, often consolidated tuff. The hike continues to the Steffeln Volcano Garden. Former lava mining at the Steffelnkopf has significantly reduced the height of the volcanic cone, which once stood over 600 m tall. This has exposed the volcanic layers inside. The exposed volcanic vent has been converted into an experimental and educational volcano .

Those who wish can then take a short detour (by car) with the guide to the Eichholzmaar.
