Vulkaneifel Nature and Geopark

The Vulkaneifel—a valuable natural heritage site, designated as a European Geopark and part of the UNESCO-supported Global Geoparks Network

The Westeifel volcanic field, which is protected within the Vulkaneifel Nature and Geopark, measures approximately 30 by 60 kilometers and stretches from Bad Bertrich in the southeast to Ormont in the northwest. About 100 cinder cones and 70 maar craters have been identified here.

The Vulkaneifel Nature and Geopark and five other regions in Germany received recognition as UNESCO Global Geoparks in November 2015. With the confirmation of the “International Geoscience and Geoparks Program” by the UNESCO General Conference, the Vulkaneifel Nature and Geopark has now achieved a level of international recognition that elevates it to the status of World Heritage Sites and biosphere reserves.

UNESCO Geoparks offer a unique perspective on a region’s geological, natural, and cultural heritage. They promote environmental education and contribute to sustainable regional development through the collaboration of many stakeholders.

Together with the certified nature and geopark guides and tour guides of the Vulkaneifel, the geopark offers a varied, exciting, and diverse program of nature experiences year-round, introducing you to the treasures of this fascinating landscape.
