Schloss Schmidtheim
Dahlem
In 1511, Daem Beissel married the heiress Eva von Schmidtheim, whose family had presumably lived in Schmidtheim for 300 years. She brought Schmidtheim into the marriage.
Today, it is hardly recognizable that Schloss Schmidtheim was once a water castle. With an elevation of 545 m, it was the highest located water castle in the Rhineland. The last moat was filled in with construction debris following a devastating fire in 1890.
Around 1627, during the Thirty Years' War, the castle was built in its current form: iron anchors on the façade have preserved this date.
However, the oldest part of the castle, the vaulted cellar of the former keep, dates back to the 14th century.
You can observe a remarkable triad at the approach to Schloss Schmidtheim. Here, you are in the shadow of three “powers”: the clerical, the legal, and the economic power.
Because here, next to the entrance to the castle's outbuildings, stands the ancient court lime tree and the tower of the Schmidtheim church of St. Martin. Such a combination in this spatial proximity is rarely found.
Schloss Schmidtheim remains the ancestral seat of the Counts Beissel von Gymnich.
It is also a medium-sized company, passionately run by the family and employees. Together, they maintain the extensive estate with love and great interest in tradition and history.
Schloss Schmidtheim is open to people who wish to experience and enjoy the special atmosphere of the house. Whether at a celebration, a wedding, a conference, a reception, or in the holiday residence “La Maison.”
