Dorfspaziergang Wollersheim

Nideggen

Wollersheim's silhouette is dominated by two church towers. Unusual for a village of only around 660 inhabitants. But this is not the only special feature of the charming Börde village. The village fascinates architecture connoisseurs with a multitude of well-preserved buildings from over three centuries and surprises with the oldest family brewery in the Eifel. Wollersheim also enchants visitors with its relaxing tranquillity. A reason for many second homes. Since the construction of the bypass, strolling through the 800-year-old village is a double pleasure. It was probably the Franks who appreciated the location near the Vlattenerbach and Neffelbach streams in the 5th/6th century. Burial grounds on the edge of the village indicate this. It is said that St. Willibrord persuaded his confessor Plektrudis, Pippin's wife, to build a church in Wollersheim, today one of the oldest sacred buildings in the region. The existence of "Wolresheim" has been clearly documented since 1184 by the monastic Fronhof belonging to the Cologne monastery Maria im Kapitol, which is called "Stiftshof". The place made a name for itself, albeit a warlike one, when Clovis Franks prevailed against Alemanni in a decisive battle in 496, presumably on the Wollersheim Heath. Later, troops of the French King Charles VI and the Duke of Jülich faced each other in this area, which came to a happy end in the Peace of Wollersheim in 1388. At the end of the Second World War, a local battle took place here, as evidenced by the trenches on the outskirts of the village. History and stories to discover on a leisurely circular walk! The Wollersheim "Stufenländchen" has its own special charm.

Situated below the rugged Eifel heights, but not yet in the depths of the Zülpicher Börde, the village exudes something picturesquely gentle. The community of around 630 inhabitants is a great place to live, especially since the cooperative village store opened in 2014. This is the ideal starting point for your short tour and you should definitely take the opportunity to stop for a bite to eat. What is now a meeting place for the local community was once the village fountain just a few meters away. Built in the 17th century, it supplied Wollersheim with valuable drinking water for a long time. Back in Zehnthofstraße, a stately farm complex is hard to miss. Hof Herhahn was built in 1747 and impresses historians with its largely original interior and exterior. In the center of the village, the hour of the clergy has come. The ensemble of the New Church, Stiftshof and Old Church is worth an extensive look. The Old Church in particular, which at first glance appears rather inconspicuous, is historically remarkable, as it is one of the oldest sacred buildings in the region with its 12th century tower. If their mouths got too dry while praying, the people of Wollersheim found a short way to a beer opposite. In 1791, Franciscus Cramer founded the Cramer Brewery, the oldest family brewery in the Eifel. The limestone soils, on which the prized Eifel malting barley is still grown today, provided the basis for this. Fans of this traditional drink are sure to find a liquid souvenir from Wollersheim in the village store at the end of the leisurely tour.
