The market place in Mayen has always been a market. Since today, you can find the weekly market every Tuesday, Thursday and Saturday here. The large market, which is held every three months, is very popular and the fun fair "Lukasmarkt" in October, which is the largest fair in the northern of Rhineland-Palatinate.
In the middle of the market place is a market fountain, which was built in 1812 by Michael von Alken. The fountain has three floors. The upper floor stands for the people, the middle for large lifestock and the bottom floor stands for the small lifestock.

Mayen´s pit field is oner of the oldest and most important mines of basalt lava. This porous stone is perfectly suitable for grain grindings am millstones. A tour leads through the mine landscape, in the depth of the petrified lava river of the Bellerberg volvano with ist bizzare pillars. Roman mining traces can be found near a modern crane from the 20 th century. The sculpture park "LAPIDEA" is also on this area which is used for all kinds of events an by arches as training camp.
