The starting point of the 22 km long water adventure trail is the Friedenau parking lot in the central town of Kreuzau. After crossing a small arm of the pond, you reach the Schneidhausen weir, one of the most important and oldest weirs in the municipality of Kreuzau, and walk up the Rur past several listed mill ponds and weirs such as the Oberschellenwehr "An den 3 Erken". Mill ponds have been running through the Rur valley as man-made water channels for many centuries. Most of the ponds were created in the late Middle Ages and were used to operate mills and private power stations. Even today, they are still of great importance for the companies in the paper industry in Kreuzau and Untermaubach. There is a gate at each branch of the mill pond. This is used to regulate the water level of the mill pond. In the district of Obermaubach, you walk around the reservoir with its weir system, new fish ladder, water extraction by the Düren public utility company and power station. As you walk around the reservoir, you will be treated to impressive views of the resting and breeding grounds of numerous waterfowl species. The way back takes you through stream valleys and man-made ponds past an elevated water tank to a viewpoint selected for hiking tourism, the Eifelblick "Hemgenberg" with a distant view over the Rura floodplain to the Siebengebirge. Hiking over the ridge above Winden, you have constant visual contact with the Rur valley and return down the valley to the starting point.
