Rundweg Saffiger Felder - RSa4
Saffig
Directions:
From the village square, follow the main road down past the baroque church of Saffig. Make a short stop there to take a look at the magnificent interior. Continue along the main road until it bends left into Bassenheimer Straße and shortly afterwards turn left into Pöschstraße. After the parking lot, turn right into Eichenstraße and then left into Lindenstraße, which you follow until you reach Kettiger Straße. The path leads you up Kettiger Straße past a playground and then turns into a dirt track. The path first leads through a small wood and then onto agricultural fields. Continue straight ahead and follow the path until you reach a crossroads, where you keep left. Enjoy the pretty orchards and turn left at the next fork. An impressive view of the Neuwied basin awaits you there. Take a short detour to the Chapel of the Way of the Cross and then follow the path back towards Saffig until you reach Neuwieder Straße. On the right, this leads you downhill back to the village square.
Places of interest along the way:
Baroque church of St. Cäcilia: The baroque church in Saffig is a special architectural gem. The famous Baroque master builder Balthasar Neumann (1687-1753) was commissioned as the architect. The client was the noble family of the Counts von der Leyen, who lived in Saffig Castle at the time.
Way of the Cross Chapel: There are six small chapels or shrines in the Miesenheim district of Andernach. One of these is the Way of the Cross Chapel, a square building dating from 1848. Experts estimate that there is a baroque crucifix inside the chapel.
