The "Heavy Gravel" gravel bike route combines sections of all eight tours of the "Freifahrt Eifel" mountain bike trail network in the Rur-Eifel.

The Rurtalbahn stops in Obermaubach, Zerkall, Abenden and Heimbach are recommended as starting points. The tour can be shortened individually due to the public transport connections.

The effort is worth it, as the tour combines all the advantages of the Rur Eifel: fantastic views, meadows, forests and floodplains, sandstone cliffs, lake views and worthwhile refreshment stops.

Route description

Unlike the "Freifahrt Eifel" mountain bike trail network, the gravel bike tour is not signposted as a stand-alone tour. It's best to download the GPX data and set off!

We start at the Zerkall National Park information point on the MTB tour Seeblick (loop C) in the direction of Obermaubach. At the Obermaubach reservoir, we change to the RurUfer cycle path for a short stretch in the direction of Düren / Kreuzau to Untermaubach, where we meet the MTB tour Schöne Aussicht (Tour B). We follow this in the direction of Hürtgenwald. South of Großhau, we change back to the MTB tour Seeblick (loop C) and cycle to Hürtgen, where we change to the MTB tour Talfahrt (loop D). We follow this towards Vossenack, where we change to the MTB tour Panoramaschleife (loop F) towards Stolberg. Shortly before Schmidt, we change to the MTB tour An der Kall-Aue (loop G) towards Rursee. Shortly afterwards, we change to the MTB tour Am Seeufer (lap J) and ride on this towards Rursee and then on towards Heimbach / Rur dam. We stay on route J for quite a long stretch until we reach the MTB tour Felsen-Rundfahrt (route H) near Blens. We change to route H in the direction of Abenden and follow the signs for route H through the half-timbered village towards Brück. Above Brück, route H meets the MTB tour An der Kall-Aue (route G), which we follow only a short distance in the direction of Kreuzau / Obermaubach until we arrive back at our starting point at the Nationlapark info point.
