Neuerburg Castle was first mentioned in a document by Archbishop Albero of Trier in 1132. The oldest structure of the castle dates back to the 12th century. It was rebuilt and extended between the 14th and 16th centuries. After 1550, the castle was fortified with an eastern bastion and reinforced with curtain walls.

The castle was the seat of various ruling dynasties: the Neuerburgers, the Cronenburgers, the Rodemakers, the Virneburgers and the Manderscheiders. The fortifications were blown up by French troops on 3 May 1692 as a result of the Wars of Reunion on the orders of Louis XIV.

The manor house was then rebuilt in 1710. Today, the castle belongs to the town and was taken over by the Catholic Youth Association of New Germany on a leasehold basis in 1930 and converted into a youth hostel.

Today, Neuerburg Youth Castle is still a popular venue for school trips, seminars, youth camps, family holidays and adventures of all kinds. The inner courtyard and the castle chapel (former knights' hall) can be visited today.
