Ochtendung

The reconstructed burial mound at Ochtendung has no inscription, but thanks to modern research methods we can learn more about the deceased for whom it was built between 100 and 150 AD: almost in the middle of the burial mound, a woman with an infant or unborn child found her final resting place in an ash box made of tuff. Did they both die in childbirth? Right next to it, a small cremation grave with an urn was discovered, protected by a box made of slate slabs. The remains reveal that it was a baby aged around 9 months.
Many years later, when the tomb had already fallen into disrepair, further burials took place: Five graves literally crowded against the base of the wall. This time, however, they were inhumations. The last deceased was laid to rest in a tufa sarcophagus between 400 and 450.
