The guided adventure hike leads from the historic station building to the Helenenquelle spring with delicious Gerolsteiner mineral water in the new spa park on the Kyll. From there it goes over natural paths up to the Munterley Plateau on the Gerolstein dolomite rocks. The panoramic view from there opens up the Kyll valley and the fountain town. In the Buchenlochhöhle, the legendary resting place of the cave bear and the ice-age mammoth hunter comes to life. At the crater of the Papenkaule the origin of the Sarresdorf lava flow is explained to everyone.

Wanderung zum "Scheewen Sunnech" nach Gees mit dem Eifelverein Gerolstein

On the first weekend of Lent, the custom of driving out winter is celebrated in the Eifel region. A burning wheel wrapped in straw is rolled down the "Baarlay" to welcome spring. Afterwards, eggs and bacon or "Heedeligkooche" are eaten. The hike is approximately 10 km long. Please bring a flashlight. The 10 km hike leads from Gerolstein to Hillesheim along the former railway track. On July 1, 1912, the era of the stagecoach came to an end with the commissioning of the railway line. After destruction in World War II, the line was decommissioned. Helmut Bell from the Jünkerath railway enthusiasts explains the history along the way. Religious monuments such as the wayside crosses showcase the faith in the Eifel region. This hike around Hillesheim leads to the crosses of the seven footfalls. Until World War I, prayers were offered at these crosses as a small Stations of the Cross. At the end of the hike, there will be a short lecture on the history of the wayside crosses.
