Zeckelsweg

The chapel of the "Sorrowful Mother of God" is located on a small hill not far from the village of Kempenich. It was built in 1879 by the then pastor Ladislaus Stanislaus Ferdinand von Freyhold. The chapel stands on historical ground; there was once a castle complex on the same site, popularly known as the "old castle". The extensive complex consists of a pilgrimage chapel, Stations of the Cross, Lourdes Grotto and the burial place of Jesus with the eleven apostles as well as a garden. It is a place of contemplation and a landmark of the local community of Kempenich, which is visited by many residents and guests. From the Kreuzwäldchen, existing field paths lead to the route of the Brohltal railroad, which ran to Kempenich until 1974. Today, a cycle and hiking trail runs along this route. This path takes you back to the village. It leads past other historical sites and offers interesting views of the Burgberg with the former Kempenich Castle. The Zeckelsweg connects the individual areas and provides exciting insights into the history of the village with information boards. Due to its route and length of 2.9 kilometers, it is particularly suitable for families with children, but also for people with limited mobility. Alternatively, it is also possible to skip the loop through the Kreuzwäldchen altogether or to walk back from station 8 to station 5 and skip stations 9, 10 and 11, as there is a steeper hill to climb here.
The EDEKA parking lot at the start and finish point "Alter Bahnhof" provides ample parking.

The name "Zeckelsweg" is due to the fact that the people of Kempenich are commonly referred to as "Kemmeje Zeckel".
